Star Trek Online boldly goes Free to Play

Star Trek Online has been around for quite a while now after being developed by Cryptic, the original makers of City of Heroes and Champions Online. However, if you’ve overlooked the game, or haven’t played it in awhile, now might be a good time to give it a look. It has just boldy gone where most other subscription-based MMOs have: Free to Play. As any good Trek fan knows, the Federation no longer had need of money in-universe, so it certainly a fitting move for a game based on the IP.

Not that players won’t have the ability to help finance the continuation of the game – after all, even a F2P game needs a revenue source. Much like other Free to Play games, such as those from Turbine, Star Trek Online players will have an option of different tiers. In this case, there are just two: a gold tier and a silver one. Gold Members gain full access to the game’s content with virtually no restrictions of any kind by paying $14.99 a month. Silver players, on the other hand, aren’t required to drop any coin at all, and actually still gain access to all of the gameplay content. However, there are a few restrictions on the number of additional Bridge Officer slots, inventory size, and other areas. Additionally, Gold Members will have priority access to the servers.

Even with the limitations, players actually seem to be getting quite a bit for the low, low price of $0. With no cost beyond the time it takes to download, should you give the game a spin? We suggest hopping into the captain’s chair to make it so.
